Understand the change in your bill
What this calculator shows
Enter the earlier bill amount and the newer bill amount. The calculator shows the difference in dollars and, when it can be calculated, the percentage change.
For example, if a bill changes from $100 to $120, the dollar increase is $20 and the percentage increase is 20%.
Why both numbers are useful
The dollar change tells you exactly how much more or less the bill is.
The percentage change puts that difference in context. A $20 increase on a $100 bill is very different from a $20 increase on a $1,000 bill.
What to keep in mind
This calculator tells you how much the total changed. It does not tell you why it changed. Changes in rates, usage, fees, taxes, credits, or other line items require looking at the bill details.
If you want to examine two electric bills more closely, the Electric Bill Comparison tool is designed for that.
Common questions
What happens if the earlier bill was $0?
A normal percentage increase cannot be calculated from zero because there is no earlier amount to use as the starting point. The dollar change can still show what changed.
Can I use this for something other than an electric bill?
Yes. The calculation works with two bill totals regardless of the type of bill.
