Understand your credit utilization

What credit utilization means

Credit utilization means how much of your available credit you’re using. It is usually shown as a percentage. For example, if your credit card balances total $2,000 and your total credit limits are $10,000, you are using 20% of the available credit entered.

This calculator uses the balances and credit limits you enter to show your overall credit usage percentage and the percentage for each account.

How to read your result

The overall result shows how much of the combined credit limit you entered is currently being used. The account-by-account results help you see whether that usage is spread across several accounts or concentrated on one of them.

If you enter a target percentage, that is your target, not a percentage the calculator is recommending.

What to keep in mind

Credit utilization is only one part of the information that can affect a credit score, and different credit scores can treat the same information differently. The balance shown on a credit report can also differ from the balance you see today because account information may be reported at different times. This calculator does not estimate your credit score.

Common questions

Does using this calculator affect my credit score?

No. The calculator uses only the numbers you enter. It does not apply for credit or pull your credit report.

Is there one credit utilization percentage everyone should aim for?

No single number applies to every credit score or lending decision. The calculator lets you enter your own target so you can see what that target would mean for the accounts you entered.
